THE REASON WHY GOD CREATED EVIL DESPITE HIS MERCY IS IMMEASURABLE.
By Nawas Nazir
Summarised:
How many times do you wonder why innocent beings go through pain and suffering sometimes, despite there is an all-merciful God? Here is the reason why:
Evil exist affecting everyone and everything (the innocent, helpless animals, etc) to pass information from God to any one that , "Look, these are innocent beings inflicted with pain. What of you who is doing crimes (not searching for the truth, not acknowledging your creator, oppressing others etc)? Do you think you will be set free?". So it serves as a sign that definitely any disobedient one will be punished and held accountable after this life and God won't care about sympathising with him/her despite the fact that His mercy is immeasurable, since He has already shown us in this world that He can even afflict the innocent with pain as a test and warning to any sensible one. And we know and experience how disastrous it is to be in pain.
All these facts were gathered from the Qur'an which was revealed 1400 years ago from the following verse:
Surah At-Talaq, Verse 12:
It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.
Commentary: Allah said He created the heavens and the earths which include evil. He then said He does so i.e. He created the evil which is our subject matter here, in order for us to know that He is competent over all things (including the ability to punish us in the hereafter if we do wrong, even though He is the most merciful and His mercy is infinite). Consider how Allah miraculously puts these facts in few lines, answering the question that "why God despite being the most merciful, created evil (pain)" whose answer has baffled many people for years!!!
Detailed:
The Solution of Problem Of Evil
The reason usually put forward by many atheists for not believing in the existence of God and why many people have weak faith in God's existence resulting to disobedience to Him especially when disaster happens to us, and not completely submitting to His command is this shallow thinking: " If there is God why is there evil (pain, suffering, disasters, etc)? If there exist the creator of the universe he would have prevented them? Or he is not able to remove the evil that results from his creation? Or he is not merciful towards his creations? or because of his might, the universe is useless to him and so he created it and abandon it as held by the agnostics?
Let's reason and find out the solution and the truth and reality.
1. Just because there exist evil that doesn't mean the universe just came about without a cause and designer. Or that he is not capable of removing it (not omnipotent). Or that he is not merciful or that he doesn't care about his creations. What if He decided to have it that way for a wisdom whose knowledge he keeps to Himself to be revealed the time He wishes?
2. Based on how He designed the universe (especially the fact that we have no physical contact with Him) if there were no evil how can we thank Him and praise Him and always turn to Him for help.Without evil We would feel independent of Him and can't imagine any evil or suffering because all we know is enjoyment. And our thought would always be that, enjoyment is the normal and natural thing and so no need to thank anyone for it and so everyone would be doing all sorts of things he/she likes with no fear of anything. Imagine that presently evil exist, but yet we are ungrateful to our creator, even forgetting about Him. What would happen if there were no evil in existence? So even the pain and suffering we see is a blessing so that we obey our Lord.
3. What if evil exist affecting everyone and everything (the innocent, helpless animals, etc) to pass information from God to any one that , "Look, these are innocent beings inflicted with pain.
4. As test to both the obedient and non-obedient to God. For the obedient it is so that Allah reveals the person's degree of obedience to himself and to other people and to get the appropriate reward for that. As for the disobedient, it is so that his rebellion to God gets exposed to himself and all other people and so that he has no excuse on the day of Judgement to save him from God's punishment because he showed his rebellion instead of submitting to whatever his lord wishes while knowing that he can never escape Him and he knows that whatever his Lord does, there is wisdom behind it-only that he knows wisdom behind somethings and doesn't know that behind some other things.
5. To see and experience how pain, suffering or evil is so that man fears his creator, seek for the truth and obey Him. This is such that a disobedient one won't have an excuse when being punished by His Lord in the hereafter that "I didn't know that's how pain is. I would have searched for the truth and be loyal and obedient".
All these facts which answer the question that has baffled many people for years were gathered from the Qur'an which was revealed 1400 years ago from the following verses:
-Surah At-tur, Verse 35:
Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators?
- Surah Al-Anaam, Verse 63:
Say (O Muhammad SAW to people): "Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and the sea (dangers like storms), when you call upon Him in humility and in secret saying: If He (Allah) only saves us from this (danger), we shall truly be grateful."
Surah Al-Anaam, Verse 64:
Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Allah rescues you from it and from all other distresses, and yet you worship others besides Allah."
Surah Ar-Room, Verse 41:
Evil (sins and disobedience of Allah, etc.) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds, etc.), that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His Pardon).
Commentary: The above three verses make it clear that one of the wisdom behind which Allah created evil is so that we don't forget Him as our creator and provider and nourisher and to always turn to Him, thank Him and obey Him without which we will inherently be rebellious and atlast, taste the consequences for disregarding and disrespecting the one that owns everything and give us life without which we can't exist; neither can we create ourselves nor come out of nothing as stated in the previous verse above.
- Surah At-Talaq, Verse 12:
It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things, and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.

- Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 35:
Every human being is bound to taste death; and We test you [all] through the bad and the good [things of life] by way of trial: and unto Us you all must return.
- Surah Fatir, Verse 37:
Therein they will be crying and shouting saying: "Our Lord! Bring us out, we shall do righteous good deeds, not the evil deeds that we used to do." (Allah will reply): "Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition, could receive it? And the warner came to you. So taste it (the evil of your deeds). For there is no helper to the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.)."
Commentary: Allah's saying : "Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition, could receive it?" means that He has given us life, long enough for us to know what pain, evil, suffering etc is, so that we follow His way and not get into His punishment and so that no any disobedient one will have an excuse for not knowing what evil or pain is, and how it feels.
